LISBON
Portugal
Explore
Lisbon is flush in rich aesthetics: from Baroque palaces to tree-lined boulevards to 18th-century buildings with colorful tile facades. The only European capital on the Atlantic Ocean is home to many atmospheric neighborhoods, each one different from the next, and all either crowning one of the city’s seven hills or lying deep in between those hills. A dynamic dining scene. Locals and visitors tuck into delicious fare at everything from salt-of-the-earth tascas, or taveners, serving rustic, hearty fare to Michelin-starred eateries serving elevated and creative takes on Portuguese staples. Bairro Alto is crammed with intimate but lively bars; Alfama is one of the few districts that survived the earthquake of 1755 and thus is filled with ancient buildings, some of which house restaurants and bars that regularly put on fado concerts; and the art-centric Belém, a neighborhood that hugs river where de Gama and Columbus first set sail across the Atlantic.
