NGORONGORO CRATER
Tanzania
Explore
Ngorongoro Crater, a large volcanic caldera whose name derives from the sound made by the cattle bells of the local Maasai pastoralists. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) extends from the crater highlands all the way past Olduvai Gorge and onto the short grasslands of the southern Serengeti and Lake Ndutu. But the wildlife does not adhere to these boundaries and there is very good wildlife viewing, especially during peak calving season when the NCA plains play host to the Great Wildebeest Migration and the birth of hundreds of thousands of wildebeest in a short span of time. This brings predator action, especially with large hyena clans, cheetah, lion, and the return of African hunting dogs. Aside from sublime game drives, indulge in a feast on the Crater floor, enjoy three amazing hikes, meet the Hadzabe people or visit a traditional Maasai boma. Discover Olduvai Gorge or spend a day with a lion conservation team. Visit the local community and learn from the Maasai tribe. Guests have the opportunity to head out to the local village and speak with the Maasai tribes people, see how they live in their homes, and buy from their local market. You are able to buy locally made beaded items directly from the people who make them.
